NOT GOOD ENOUGH — The story of our Christmas Dog

My husband, Bill, and I had just returned from five months of touring in our travel trailer. Finally Bill was able to enjoy some relaxation after 40 years of working as a physician. Who could be luckier than us? At one point we’d had seven horses, three donkeys, three llamas, three goats, two dozen chickens, assorted tortoises and turtles, as well as four dogs and a cat living with us. Now we were embarking on a new, simpler lifestyle sharing space with one small, shy dog named Jingle.

But we were in mourning. Most recently we’d had to let our 11 year old yellow lab go, due to a cancerous tumor. Dogs are amazingly resilient, much more so than people, but Jingle hadn’t perked up though several months had passed since Chance’s death. We needed a dog that could play with Jingle and keep her company. We needed a dog to complete our family. To our delight, we found one via a photo on a neighborhood website.

This dog was an “owner turnover” rescued by Argos, A Shelter Dog Rescue who specializes in finding homes for Shelter Dogs. He had been at a small community animal shelter and very near being euthanized for lack of kennel space. Now he was in Albuquerque awaiting adoption. He was described as timid, afraid of people but comfortable with other dogs. He had sad, serious eyes that made him look weary. We were told that after trying to escape from the van he was being transported in, he collapsed and refused to move. This dog was used to giving in to adversity.

When we met him he hid under a table with his tail tucked between his legs. The Argos representative told us: “I don’t usually show people the kennel ticket on a dog, but you should see this.” We looked at what the owner had written when he’d given up the dog. It said: NOT GOOD ENOUGH. This dog was a Labrador, but maybe he wouldn’t retrieve? Had he misbehaved, as puppies sometimes do? Maybe he’d chewed on furniture or barked too loudly or too often. Maybe he couldn’t be trained to sit, stand, or poop in a designated place? It was anybody’s guess what NOT GOOD ENOUGH meant. In the end, we decided it was the owner who wasn’t good enough.

Toby, our newest family member, has been with us now for three weeks. As Christmas approaches, we celebrate the change in him and in US. We consider him the ultimate Christmas gift. He is an example of empathy, forgiveness, and compassion. He seems to know we needed him as much as he needed us.

So this year there will be a BIG gift under our Christmas tree. It has four legs and a wagging tail. Thanks go out to the Argos people and all the other folks who rescue dogs and find them forever homes.

From Mojo’s Forever Mom Kim: Mojo is my buddy. We pulled him out of the euthanasia room at a rural NM shelter. He was a very very sick boy and kennel staff helped to stabilize him for us. Today happy tears (and some heartbreaking ones too) flowed as Buck, a 10 year old pitbull, met his new forever mom. Buddy’s owner for all of his 10 years recently passed away and her sister was sadly forced to find him a new home. She reached out to Argos for help and Argos, with the help of our rescue partners in Santa Fe, found Buck the perfect home where he will be very loved and spoiled.
